Excerpts from “Begin at the Beginning – Create!”
By Gina Graham
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2 (NKJV) Our Creator created – brilliant blues, soft hues of morning, dandelions, dizzying details, and His masterpiece . . . you! What an artist! “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV) Man was made in the image of GOD. To spend time and energy connecting with Him is worship. One satisfying way to glorify the Creator is to create with the materials and good ideas He gives. Our personal creation process will never flow like it did that first week. The most gifted humans, past and present, can’t begin to imitate GOD’s supreme symphony of matter and space – the day that art was conceived. We can’t compare. Nor do we need to. The word “art” is defined by www.dictionary.com as “the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.” This leads to the fabulous reality that because we are made in GOD’s image we are all artists! We all can produce something of significance. Form a loving thought – creation! Add frosting to a cake – creation! Write a quick note of encouragement to a friend – creation! Color with your child – Creation! This act of forming something positive and new out of what you have at your fingertips is a reflection of the ultimate truth that a loving GOD did it first. It glorifies Him. It reminds us of Him. Whether we realize it or not, it points us to Him. What do you like to create? What creative gifts do you enjoy? I’m an illustrator. I love to compose ideas and emotions with a pencil. It takes a lot of time and practice. I figure that since I spend so much of my life creating images I should create something true. That’s why I start with GOD’s WORD. I love the wisdom from Philippians 4:8 that reads, “Finally, brethren, whatever things aretrue, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate (I like to add “illustrate” on these things.” What would you like to do to stretch your GOD given creativity? Try something new! Will it be a masterpiece? Probably not. Does it matter? Not at all! It’s the process, the worship, that matters. Make something new, in the form of a memory or a physical item, out of what you have.
