Green Sprout, Atlanta

Green Sprout, Atlanta

Green Sprout Vegetarian Cuisine provides a huge array of choices for those looking to avoid animal products: everything on their menu is vegan. It’s a little bit pricier than most Chinese food at about $11 per entree but I promise it is well worth it. I had the twice-cooked soy pork with vegetables and brown rice and can’t stop thinking about it. Everything was cooked masterfully, from their house made meat-alternatives to their vegetables to their sauce. Their soup selection is especially strong. A gluten-free section of their menu is also prominently displayed on their website for anyone with a gluten sensitivity. Find them in Atlanta or at www.greensproutga.com.

The Vineyard Vegetarian Cafe & Juice Bar

The Vineyard Vegetarian Cafe & Juice Bar

I had a work conference at Barnsley Garden in Northern Georgia and technology told me that I-75 was blocking my travels northward This turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

My wife and I were headed toward highway 27 when hunger took over and we discovered a most wonderful place to eat and refresh, The Vineyard Vegetarian Café and Juice Bar.

I tried their Bella Burger while my wife had the Tempeh club sandwich. We also sampled the juice special. What appealed to me was the fresh baked bread, fresh ingredients, and excellent potato salad. The service though was just as special as the cuisine.

It is not all that often in this hustle bustle world where the staff talks to you, explains their mission, and genuinely cares for you as a person on this planet. This was so evident as I dined. This made the food taste all the better and enhanced the dining experience.

The food cost about what a “Happy Meal” would cost at a drive through. The experience, though, was a memory that I will carry forward. If you are driving down 27 near Summerville in Northern Georgia, The Vineyard will be worth the stop even if you are not that hungry. Serving a meal with love and purpose did it for me.

The Grit

Athens Georgia is a great college town known for the Georgia Bulldogs. After eating dinner there recently, it will be also known for The Grit. This trendy healthy eating establishment is at 199 Prince Avenue, 706-543-6592, thegrit.com. This restaurant has been around for over twenty years. My wife had one of their fabulous bowls, the Golden Bowl loaded with veggies and seasoned tofu. My daughter had the tabouli, but I must say I think I picked out the best dish.

I had the Seitan cheese steak. The texture and flavoring made every bite an adventure for my taste buds. I also had a side of sweet potato fries which were delicious. All of the veggies were fresh and perfectly flavored. With years of experience The Grit knows what works when it comes to healthy foods. Omnivores are as comfortable as herbivores there. I think the way they texture Seitan is the key to helping the meat-eaters realize that plant-based food can taste great and have the same texture they are accustomed to.

The atmosphere was eclectic with modern art, large windows and an energy you would expect from a college town. The Grit is worth the trip to Athens alone. Add in a great college town with friendly folks and your day will be one to remember.

Herban Fix

Herban Fix

Herban Fix Vegan Kitchen is in downtown Atlanta, near the midtown campus of Emory University. They serve “Pan-Asian” cuisine and are fairly high-end. The atmosphere is clean, modern, and would be excellent for a date night. The menu is diverse, taking inspiration from many different Asian cultures and a few European ones as well. For example, their most popular appetizer is the Sweet Pea Ravioli and it’s their most popular for a reason. Across the board, their food is light, savory, flavorful, and 100% plant-based–there’s not much more you can ask for. The chefs here are clearly skilled at teasing the best textures and flavors out of plant-based proteins like tofu or mushrooms. The pom-pom mushroom steak is particularly excellent. I’d steer clear of their fried foods, as they can tend to be a little overly oily. But anything else on the menu is fair game. The service is very good. Our waitress in particular clearly knew her stuff, recommending to us what turned out to be our favorite dishes. Entrees are 12-15 USD at lunch and 15-19 USD at dinner.

Sweet Tomatoes, Atlanta

Sweet Tomatoes, Atlanta

We were down in the Atlanta area and stopped at one of the family favorites, Souplantation & Sweet Tomatoes. I must tell you that this is a chain, but there is something healthy and tasty for everyone to eat.

The restaurant;s headquarters is in San Diego where it began in 1978. The chain has grown to 128 restaurants in 15 states, mostly in the western United States.

Here is what I like. The salad bar is always fresh and has many kinds of fresh greens. Every fresh vegetable is present including beets chopped up just right. I have yet to find a better or fresher chain salad bar. There is always a vegan soup, potatoes, pasta, and breads. It is appealing that you can create your meal. There is something for everyone including fruits. For those that want to indulge, there are options as well. The chain in Atlanta is clean and the staff is always nice. The establishment stays busy and a meal costs around ten dollars. If you go to the website, you can identify the many other locations. I guarantee you will find a healthy meal there. Last visit I had some spinach with at least ten other vegetables and a lite dressing mixed with jalapenos. I added a vegan chowder and felt satisfied. The soups and pastas do change seasonally. The website is great in that it gives the current menu.

Cali N Tito’s, Athens

Cali N Tito’s, Athens

Near the University of Georgia campus in Athens is a funky Latin restaurant called Cali N Tito’s. The line was long when we arrived, but it moved quickly and it’s always a good sign when there’s a long line! The place has a funky Latin vibe with a run down looking playground, picnic tables around, and lots of colorful and old stuff everywhere. They have a vegetarian section on the menu and our group tried all of them without a single disappointment. The Veggie Saltado that I had was composed of grilled mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, tomato, zucchini, fries, tortilla’s and rice. The seasoning of the veggie’s was perfect and the accompanying hot sauce was perfect, not too hot but excellent flavor. I highly recommend Cali N Tito’s!

Café Sunflower, Atlanta

Café Sunflower, Atlanta

Atlanta is a growing metro area and I am glad to write a review on a healthy establishment that I revisited this past week,Sunflower Cafe.

This restaurant is off Peachtree near Piedmont Hospital. The atmosphere is quaint with three dining areas, wood all around the tables and few booths. The ambience, as well as the price, suggest a date night or special occasion. The service was impeccable.

The menu is loaded with beverages, appetizers, and a variety of entrees. We chose for a starter avocado tacos and a lentil soup. This was the perfect way to start a meal. Our main dish consisted of a seitan steak with mash potatoes, fresh asparagus wrapped in a green sauce. The texture was amazing, very similar to roast beef. The waitress said they have a local supplier who specializes in texture. The potatoes were seasoned well with garlic. The portion was small, but the texture of the dish and presentation impressed me.

Our other dish was a fettuccini alfredo in a cashew based sauce with fresh vegetables sprinkled throughout. This was a solid dish but was not as impressive as the seitan steak.

On the walls were several citations from national organizations citing Sunflower Cafe Atlanta as a top ten place to eat without bothering your conscience. A top ten may be up to debate, but the presentation, and food texture were great. The portions were a little small for my taste, as I was wanting more, but I did not leave feeling “bogged” down, which is good. Overall if you need a special occasion, Cafe Sunflower gets a thumbs up.
