Though the plant-based options here are not quite as plentiful as some other restaurants , the ones that are there are spectacular: the Veritable Vegan Epiphany (the best take on a tofu scramble I have ever tried) stands out in particular. Many of the egg dishes featured also have the option to be replaced with tofu. The menu also features lots of juices, teas, smoothies, and a spectacular array of fruits and vegetables with nearly every menu item. They are open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. The first things that come to mind when you think of diner food are usually not particularly healthy, much less plant-based. That’s different at the Chicago Diner—their slogan is “Meat-free since ’83”. Everything on the menu is totally plant-based or can be made totally plant-based. They also have a specific gluten free menu. There’s lots of healthy options—and some spectacular desserts as well. Lots of diner-styled favorites like chicken wings, burgers, or even milkshakes take a more plant-based approach here. Entrees range from about $10-$15. We stumbled upon LYFE Kitchen during a snowstorm in Chicago and considered ourselves lucky to find a place that had lots of plant-based options, including ones inclusive of major dietary restrictions (especially gluten free dishes). We were just looking for somewhere warm and clean (LYFE Kitchen is both of those things as well). The food was tasty, and substitutions were easily made for any dish—so any of their salads that have meat listed are easily made vegetarian. Their selection of teas, juices, and smoothies is also very good. Entrees range from $9-$14 and they have five locations, three around Chicago, one in Memphis, TN and one in Palo Alto, CA.
