Restaurant Review

Deep in the heart of Texas we ran into Mother’s Cafe. The outside of the facility is in an unassuming neighborhood north of the University of Texas campus in Austin, but once we stepped inside my assumption that I would get a great healthy meal was met. The ambience was important. We dined on a weekend and a harpist was performing gentle, food tastes better with music, melodies.

The menu had a variety of choices. I chose the enchiladas while my daughter ordered the vegan sloppy jos. The sloppy jo was spicy with a tint of sweetness and perfect texture. The enchilada was good but I would have added a few peppers. As I observed it seemed like many were ordering the stir fry dishes. Every dish had gluten free and vegan substitutes. The ingredients were from known, fresh suppliers and I think this is a key to a great vegan restaurant. The hosts were excellent at answering questions. What would keep me coming back were the vegan desserts including chocolate peanut butter pie. What more can I say about this! The dish melted in my mouth.

Prices ran from 8-10 dollars. For those that like smoothies, a wide variety along with a  Jamaican ginger ale were on the menu. The place was vibrant and full for our noon time meal. The restaurant must be doing something special as they have been in business for over thirty years. If in Austin, Mother’s cafe is a must. You will need a GPS to get to this cozy neighborhood gem.
